Vietnamese materials

Rare Materials Notice: This collection contains many rare books, manuscripts, and other unique items that are only accessible in the Asian Reading Room by advance appointment. The Southeast Asian Rare Book Collection contains several original Vietnamese books written in Chữ Nôm script. These texts were originally donated to the Library of Congress by the French colonial authorities in Hanội, which was then the administrative capital of French Indochina. In 1918, the Director of l'École Française d'Extrême-Orient in Hanội, Claude-Eugène Maitre donated some works. In 1920, additional works were donated. All of these books were printed from the Nguyễn dynasty's palace blocks making them historically significant and warranting attention by scholars and researchers.

The collection also has more recent reproductions of Vietnamese Chữ Nôm works. These are listed on a separate "Vietnamese Nôm reproductions" tab below. They were reprinted on Vietnamese rice paper by the Institute of Han Nôm Studies in Hanội.

This page also lists other Vietnamese rare books and missionary texts. These range from French colonial era works, to mini-book Christian works, to poetry, to a signed copy of Võ Nguyên Giáp's account of the epochal 1954 Battle of Điện Biên Phủ.

The ephemera collections include the Paul Mus Papers and the USIA Cold War-era Vietnamese collection. The Paul Mus Papers include newspaper clippings, government reports and communications spanning the end of World War II including Vietnam, but also touching on Cambodia and Laos, too. Documents by different governments are found in the collection including the provisional government of the Republic of Cochinchina and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
