On September 18, 2020, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, creating a vacancy on the Supreme Court of the United States. On September 26, 2020, President Trump announced the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit .
