Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I (TGM): An Introduction

II. Indexing Images: Some Principles

It is desirable to follow standard indexing practice when using TGM I, especially in MARC records that will be integrated with cataloging of non- pictorial materials. This section focuses on techniques which are particularly relevant to pictorial indexing.1 These guidelines assume that TGM I will be applied primarily within a cataloging environment that allows for a variety of topical subject access points to be appended to a descriptive cataloging record for either a single graphic item or for a group of graphic items. (See Section IV for guidance in indexing for vertical file systems.)
