United States: City and Telephone Directories

Online Resources

The Library of Congress is one of many repositories working to digitize U.S. City and Telephone Directories. Below are links to digital collections provided by the Library of Congress to online images and subscription databases. You should also explore state and local library collections in the geographical areas of interest to determine if they have made digital material available.

For a convenient list of the digitized directories:

  1. Click on the Collection Items tab.
  2. Scroll down the sidebar until you see Location. On that list, click More Locations.
  3. On this page, you can select the option to organize the location list alphabetically.
  4. Now you can navigate all cities included in the digital collection. Once you select the city of interest, you can use the Sort By box in the top-right corner to arrange the directories for that city by date.

If you do not find the city of interest in the online collection, study the U.S. City Directories and U.S. Telephone Directories pages of this guide for complete lists of print and microform directories at the Library of Congress.
