For Veterans History Project staff members, the collections in our archive are more than voices on a recording or words on a page. Whether facilitating volunteers’ participation in the Project, receiving and processing donated material, or connecting researchers to our collections, VHP staffers work closely with the stories in our stacks. This latest edition of the Experiencing War series presents collections selected for their personal resonance by members of the VHP staff. Some of these stories have been featured previously on this site, while others may be unfamiliar, yet all of them powerfully illustrate of experience of serving in the Armed Forces. We hope that you will connect with these stories as much as we do.
The Veterans History Project (VHP) of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.
