The Veterans History Project (VHP) of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American military veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of military service.
This section of the guide will orient you to the Veterans History Project (VHP) website and illustrate multiple ways to access Veterans History Project (VHP) Collection. You can use the searchable VHP Collection to locate information about a veteran and their collection materials, or to help you do broader research on topics. For more specific guidance on how to search the collections for Vietnam War veterans or Vietnam War-related topics, please see the Searching the Collections section of this guide.
The VHP website provides general information about the project, how to participate, materials in support of creating oral histories, and guidance for researchers. It also provides a direct connection to the Veterans History Project Collection.
From the Veterans History Project website, select the "Explore the Collections" tab, or select "Learn more" from the Search & Discover panel to begin your research. The Veterans History Project Collection contains descriptive records for every veteran's collection preserved at the Library of Congress. In many cases, veterans' collections will also contain digitized content, such as: video and audio interviews; visual materials (photographs, art works, maps, etc.); correspondence; written memoirs; and more.
